Bathroom Drain Clogged? Floor Trap Fixes for HDB Flats

Bathroom drain clogged? A 1-bucket test tells a floor trap choke from a bad floor slope, what’s safe to try in an HDB flat, and when it’s the Town Council’s.

Key Takeaways

  • A clogged bathroom drain in an HDB flat is almost always the floor trap, choked by hair and soap scum, sometimes with sand or a dropped cap.
  • Pour a bucket straight into the trap first. If it vanishes, there’s no choke. The floor is sloping water away from the drain.
  • Never mix drain cleaners, or follow one with bleach or an acid cleaner. Hot water, dish soap and a plunger come first.
  • Water rising up your trap when someone upstairs flushes means the shared stack, which is the Town Council’s job.
  • Clearing a choked bathroom floor trap costs S$99 in Singapore and takes about 1 hour 15 minutes with Urban Company, and it comes with a 30-day choke-free guarantee.

It’s 7am in your 5-room flat in Tampines. Halfway through your shower the water is round your ankles, and the kids are queuing outside. Last week it drained slowly. This morning it stopped.

Why Is My Bathroom Drain Clogged?

Because something is blocking the floor trap. HDB’s floor trap care guide says solid matter and/or grease in the floor trap blocks the flow of water. In a bathroom, that usually means:

  1. Hair and soap scum, which bind into a slimy mat that catches the rest.
  2. Sand and grit from beach days, or cement slurry after renovation, which can set hard in the bend.
  3. Foreign objects such as shampoo caps or a child’s toy.
  4. A sunken or badly sloped floor. The trap is fine, but water pools elsewhere and never reaches it.
  5. A choke in the shared stack, backing water up into your flat.

If the trap smells rather than chokes, see our guide to a smelly bathroom floor trap. For grey soap film round the drain, here’s how to clean bathroom tiles and grout without damage.

Is It a Choke or the Floor Slope?

Pour a full bucket of water straight into the trap and watch.

  • Drains in seconds: no choke. If shower water still sits in a corner, the floor slopes the wrong way.
  • Drains slowly, then backs up: a partial choke in the trap or just below.
  • Doesn’t drain, or bubbles back: a full choke. Stop showering on it.

A plumber can’t unclog a wrong-gradient floor; it needs re-laying. In a new BTO, report ponding early: HDB says newly completed flats are covered by a 1-year Defects Liability Period from key collection.

How Do You Unclog a Bathroom Floor Trap Safely?

Start with your hands, then hot water, then a plunger. Wear rubber gloves.

  1. Lift the grating. Prise it gently with a flathead screwdriver if stuck.
  2. Pull out the hair and slime with your fingers or an old toothbrush. Bin it; don’t rinse it back down.
  3. Pour hot water with dish soap. Use a kettle that has cooled for a few minutes, plus a good squeeze of dishwashing liquid. Hot, not boiling: boiling water can soften plastic traps.
  4. Plunge. Use a small cup plunger, not the toilet one. Cover the cup with water, seal it over the trap and pump firmly 10 to 15 times.
  5. Try a short hand drain snake. Feed it in gently, turning as you go, and pull the hair back out. Don’t force it past a bend.
  6. Put the grating back. HDB advises keeping it closed so hair and other solids can’t choke the trap.

What Should You Never Pour Down a Choked Floor Trap?

Never mix drain cleaners, and never follow one with bleach or an acid toilet cleaner. Bleach and acid together release chlorine gas, and a small bathroom with the door shut is the worst place for it. NEA tells households not to mix different disinfectant products and to use them in a well-ventilated area.

  • Go easy on caustic cleaners. They get hot as they react, which is hard on older pipes and joints in resale flats.
  • Don’t plunge after a chemical. It can splash onto your skin or eyes.

Is It Your Floor Trap or the Block’s Pipe?

A choke in your trap or the pipe from it is yours. A choke in the main stack is the Town Council’s. HDB’s guide to pipes in your flat says you maintain the sanitary branch pipes in your flat, and the Town Council maintains the main sanitary pipes. In a condo, ask the managing agent.

Suspect the stack if water rises up your trap when you haven’t used it, or neighbours on the same column have the same problem. If your trap rises when you flush your own toilet, the choke is probably in your branch pipe, and our guide to a choked toilet bowl explains the bowl-or-pipe test.

When Should You Call a Plumber?

Call one when the trap is still slow after the 6 DIY steps, the choke comes back within weeks, or grit has set in the bend. HDB’s own advice is to remove the solids yourself and, for serious cases, engage a licensed plumber.

Under PUB’s plumbing works rules, clearing a blockage in a floor trap and replacing a grating are simple works a handyman may do. Replacing the floor trap itself is not on that list, so if a cracked trap needs replacing, ask whether a PUB Licensed Plumber will do it. Floor trap replacement with Urban Company starts from S$60.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my bathroom floor trap keep choking?

Usually because hair and soap scum keep building up under the grating, where they bind into a mat that catches everything else. Sand, cement from renovation and dropped bottle caps make it worse. Keep the grating in place, pull out hair weekly, and rinse the trap with hot, not boiling, water.

How do I unclog a shower drain without a plumber?

Wear gloves, lift the grating and pull out the hair and slime. Pour in hot, not boiling, water with a good squeeze of dishwashing liquid, then plunge 10 to 15 times with a small cup plunger. A short hand drain snake can reach a little further. If it’s still slow, stop there.

Can I use a chemical drain cleaner on a bathroom floor trap?

It’s the last thing to try, not the first. Caustic cleaners get hot as they react, which is hard on older pipes and joints. Never mix 2 products, never follow one with bleach or an acid cleaner, and never plunge afterwards. If it doesn’t work, tell the plumber exactly what you poured in.

Why is water not draining in my bathroom when the trap is clear?

If a bucket poured straight into the trap disappears fast, the trap isn’t choked. The floor is sloping the wrong way, usually because the screed under the tiles has sunk or was laid without enough fall. A plumber can’t fix that. It needs a contractor to re-lay the floor.

Who clears a choked floor trap in an HDB flat, me or the Town Council?

A choke in your own floor trap or branch pipe is yours to clear. HDB says the Town Council maintains the main sanitary pipes. If water rises up your trap when someone upstairs flushes, or neighbours on the same stack have the same problem, report it to the Town Council first.

Do I need a licensed plumber to clear a floor trap choke?

No. PUB lists clearing a blockage in a floor trap as simple plumbing work that a handyman without a licence may do, and the same goes for replacing the grating. Replacing the floor trap itself is not on that list, so ask whether a Licensed Plumber will do it before work starts.
