Door squeaking? How to fix a squeaky door in your HDB flat

Door squeaking? Find which of 5 causes it is, how to oil a squeaky door hinge properly, and when a handyman booked by the hour from $39 is the better call.

Oil dripping from a can spout onto the pin of a rusty steel door hinge

Key takeaways

  • Find where it squeaks. Whole swing: the hinge. At 1 point: the door is rubbing. Only as it shuts: the latch.
  • Tighten the hinge screws, then lift 1 pin at a time and clean it.
  • Lubricate with light machine oil, silicone spray or grease, not a water-displacing spray on its own.

Find the squeak first

Rest your hand on each hinge while someone swings the door. The squeaky one vibrates under your fingers. If none does, look for shiny rub marks on the frame or floor.

The Meteorological Service Singapore’s climate of Singapore page puts mean annual relative humidity at around 82%, frequently reaching 100% during prolonged rain. That’s why bathroom-side hinges tend to rust and squeak first.

Oil won’t fix rubbing. That’s a door not closing properly. A squealing sliding door needs its track vacuumed and a little silicone spray on the rollers. If it jumps off, see our sliding wardrobe door guide.

How do you fix a squeaky door hinge?

Tighten, then lift, clean and lubricate the pin. HDB’s home care guide for gates and doors says hinge screws, especially the top hinge’s, loosen over time, and advises: “Oil all locks, hinges, and other mechanisms to keep moving parts working smoothly”.

  1. Close the door and lay a cloth on the floor.
  2. Tighten every hinge screw, top hinge first. If a screw spins without gripping, the hole is stripped. Our sagging cabinet door guide shows the glued-plug fix.
  3. Work on 1 hinge at a time. Tap the pin upwards from below with a nail and hammer, then pull it out. Never remove all the pins at once.
  4. Clean the pin. If it’s rusty, rub it smooth with fine sandpaper or steel wool.
  5. Coat it thinly with light machine oil, silicone spray or grease, and tap it back in.
  6. Swing the door 10 to 20 times, then wipe off any drips.

If the pin won’t come out, as on many main doors, oil the top of the knuckle instead.

What should you use on a squeaky door?

Water-displacing spray and cooking oil don’t last (see the FAQs below).

Main door closer and shelter door: what you can oil and what you can’t

Main door closer. HDB’s gate and door guide says fire-rated entrance doors have a door closer, a self-closing safety device that must not be removed. If it squeaks, tighten its screws and put a little oil on the arm joints. HDB says to replace a closer that leaks fluid and can’t shut the door on its own. If the door slams or closes too slowly, that’s an adjustment, not a squeak, and our door not closing properly guide covers it.

Household shelter door. HDB’s household shelter care guide says to oil its latch, hinges, locking bolts and handle, and warns that letting the heavy door hit the skirting tiles can loosen the hinge screws. Broken shelter door hinges need a household shelter door repair contractor, the only source of the parts.

When oil isn’t enough

Oiling and tightening are fair DIY jobs. A squeak that returns within days, a grinding sound or a bent hinge leaf is where a handyman takes over:

  • Stripped screw holes: the hole is plugged and re-drilled, or longer screws are driven through into the frame so the hinge grips again.
  • Worn or bent hinges: the hinge set is swapped. Urban Company lists this as Door hinge plate replacement, from $75.
  • Heavy or rubbing doors: the door is lifted off, re-hung and adjusted so it clears the frame, a job that needs a second pair of hands.

An Urban Company handyman brings the tools. Hardware such as replacement hinges may need to be supplied by you, so check the listing when you book. Bookings are by the hour, not by task, from $39 in 30-minute blocks, so 1 visit can also fix a loose door handle or a stuck drawer. See the full handyman price list and book a handyman in Singapore.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my door squeaking all of a sudden?

Usually the hinge pin has run dry, or a loose hinge screw lets the hinge leaves grind together. In Singapore’s humid air, bathroom-side hinges also rust. Open the door slowly. A squeak through the whole swing is the hinge. A squeak at 1 spot means the door is rubbing.

What is the best thing to put on a squeaky door hinge?

Light machine oil, silicone spray or a thin film of grease on the hinge pin. They stay where you put them. If the pin is rusty, a water-displacing spray helps loosen and clean it first, but on its own it’s too thin to last, so always finish with a proper lubricant.

Can I use cooking oil on a squeaky door?

It’s better not to. Cooking oil quiets a hinge for a while, but it turns sticky as it ages, gathers dust and can start to smell. It also runs down the door. A small bottle of light machine oil costs little, lasts much longer and is made for exactly this job.

How do I fix a squeaky door without taking the pin out?

Lay a cloth on the floor, put a few drops of light machine oil on top of each hinge where the pin enters, and swing the door until the oil works down. Wipe off any drips. If the squeak returns within a week, lift the pin and clean it properly.

Why does my main door closer squeak?

The closer’s arm joints can run dry, or its screws can loosen. Tighten the screws and put a little light oil on the arm joints. HDB says the closer on a fire-rated main door must not be removed. If fluid is leaking and the door won’t shut on its own, the closer needs replacing.

Is a squeaky door a sign of a bigger problem?

Sometimes. A squeak that comes back within days of oiling, a grinding sound, or a door that has started rubbing the frame can mean a worn pin, a bent hinge or loose screws that have let the door drop. A screw that spins without gripping means the hole is stripped. Those are handyman jobs.
